Our Mission
Fuel reduction treatments produce wood waste and residues, also known as slash, which could become a potential hazardous surface fuel if left on the ground. There is a critical need to find practical and cost-effective ways to remove wood waste from forests, especially in regions that are at high risk of wildfires, such as California. Therefore, our main goal is to develop and validate a mobile robotic platform that can reduce physical labor of human crews and increase their efficiency during fuel reduction treatments, accelerating the removal of wood waste and residues from forests. In pursuit of this goal, a diverse set of researchers from UC Merced will collaborate with UC Merced Natural Reserve System and community partners, such as Earth Force Technologies, Inc. and Berkeley Forests.
